Built with Skulls - FULLVIEW

This is a wall facade of a church in Evora, Portugal. The church was entirely built :EDIT: with skeletons and mainly skulls (thousands of them) :EDIT:. I am not sure about the whole story behind it but I was really overthrown by this dreadful and cold place that I wanted to share with you.

EDIT 2: The chapel is called the chapel of bones and it is situated by the church Igreja de Sao Francisco. A timeless and gruesome memorial to the mortality of man, the walls and pillars of this chilling chamber are entirely covered in the bones of more than 5000 monks. During the 15th and 16th centuries, there were 42 monastic cemeteries in town which took up much-needed space. The Franciscans' neat solution was to move all the remains to one compact, consecrated site. There's a grim humous in the ordered well planned arrangement of skulls, tibias and femurs around the walls and pillars and in the rhyming inscribtion above the entrance: "Nos ossos que aqui estamos pelos vossos esperamos" -"We bones here are waiting for your bones."
