Eagle on Campusby =alahay

I cannot remember when was the last time I saw an eagle and I was surprised to find one at the IU campus!

Luckily I had time to switch from my prime lens to a 70-300 mm zoom!

I thank *Naira-Wolf-Satyr for pointing out that this might be a hawk instead! I am thinking either golden eagle or peregrine falcon or buteo!

I guess we need an ornithologist or a birder to really tell!

After many comments and investigation, I believe it is a red tailed hawk :)

i'd agree to that. just by coloration it's wrong for an eagle or buteo, and the falcon's head is not quite like that...redtails do have that flecking though so i'd say that's a good guess

really? i wasn't sure about the buteo so i googled pics and it was pretty much all of way darker birds so i didn't think about it...well now i know & won't make that mistake again. thanks :)

Looks like a hawk to me, the beak seems too short, head is a bit round to be an eagle. Doesn't look like a peregrine, they have pretty prominent eye bars and are smaller. Darn, I can't really tell what it is other than that, maybe I'll get my bird book and try to find the closest match.

I agree! Maybe next time I spot it I will take better pictures to have a more accurate identification.
